Rubbish Removal Costs and Quote Guide

Rubbish removal costs depend on the amount being collected, the materials involved and the work needed to load them. A small quantity of heavy waste can require a different quotation from a larger volume of light household items.

To request a quote from Magnus Removals, send your postcode, a list of the items and clear photographs. Tell us about stairs, restricted access and anything that is not visible in the pictures.

What affects the cost of rubbish removal?

Load size and weight

The space your items occupy matters, but volume is not the whole picture. Dense materials can reach a weight limit before filling the available vehicle space.

Describe the materials as well as the size of the pile. Do not assume that bags of rubble, soil or other heavy contents can be priced in the same way as bags of light household rubbish.

If you do not know the volume, provide photographs with a clear indication of scale.

Access and loading work

The collection point affects how much work is involved.

Tell us whether items are inside the property, upstairs, in a garden or already accessible near the loading point. Mention narrow passages, unavailable lifts and the distance between the items and the vehicle.

If furniture may need dismantling, identify it before the visit. Do not dismantle or move heavy items unsafely to prepare for collection.

Type and condition of the waste

Different materials may require different handling or disposal arrangements. Identify appliances, large furniture, garden waste and any building-related materials separately.

Do not conceal liquids, sharp objects, chemicals or unidentified substances inside mixed bags. Explain what is present so suitability can be checked before collection.

Furniture, appliances and mixed waste

For furniture disposal, provide the type, quantity and approximate size of the items. A photograph can help show whether a sofa, wardrobe or table may be difficult to move through the property.

For appliances, state the appliance type and whether it has been safely disconnected. Do not assume disconnection or specialist preparation is included.

For mixed waste, photograph the complete collection and describe the main materials. A picture of the front of a pile may not reveal heavy or unusual items behind it.

Discuss the items you need collected

What should the collection quote include?

Before booking, check:

  • The items and materials included.
  • Any volume or weight allowance.
  • Carrying and loading labour.
  • Disposal charges.
  • Any minimum collection charge.
  • Charges for additional weight, time or items.
  • The VAT treatment and final payable total.
  • How changes to the collection will be agreed.

Ask whether photographs are enough to confirm the price or whether an assessment is still needed. If you add items after receiving a quote, send updated information before the visit.

Rubbish collection or skip hire?

The better option depends on the job.

OptionWhen it may suit
Staffed rubbish collectionItems are ready for removal and you want loading assessed as part of the service.
Skip hireWaste will accumulate over a period and there is a suitable place for the skip.
Council bulky-item collectionThe items meet your council’s acceptance rules and the available collection arrangements suit you.

Compare the total cost, accepted materials, labour, space requirements and timing.

For a skip on a public road in England or Wales, a permit is generally required; the application arrangements depend on the council. A skip placed entirely on private land does not require that road permit. Check the government skip-permit guidance.

Do not assume that rubbish collection is always cheaper than a skip, or that the cheapest option accepts every material.

Send useful photographs

Take a wide photograph showing the whole collection, then closer photographs of bulky or unusual items.

Include the route from the items to the loading point if access is difficult. Describe anything hidden in bags or containers and give approximate dimensions for large furniture.

Add your postcode, preferred collection period and any access restrictions. This is more useful than a description such as “a small load”.

Check who collects your waste

Before using a private household-waste collector in England, check the appropriate waste-carrier registration. Keep a record of the booking and collection.

The government’s household-waste disposal guidance explains the checks to make.
