Moving and storage when your dates do not match

You may need to leave your current property before the next one is ready. Renovation work, a delayed completion or a change in your plans can also leave you with furniture and boxes that cannot go straight to their final destination.

For moving and storage between properties, tell us what needs storing, when it must be collected and your expected return date. Include the likely delivery address or area. If the date is uncertain, explain that at the start and update us when your plans become clearer so storage and redelivery can be arranged together.

Storage can be planned alongside your house removal, helping you consider collection, storage and the final delivery together.

Choose the storage period around your plans

Short-term storage

Short-term storage can help bridge the gap between moving out and moving in, or keep furniture out of the way while a room is being prepared.

Give us the expected dates and explain whether they are fixed. Storage is booked weekly or monthly, there is no fixed notice period for return delivery, and you can access your belongings with 24 hours’ notice at no extra charge.

Longer-term storage

If you need to store belongings for longer, tell us the likely duration and whether your needs may change.

Consider which items you may need during that time. Keeping frequently used belongings separate can be more practical than arranging retrieval after everything has been placed into storage.

How collection, storage and return work

1. Tell us what needs storing

Share an item list or photographs, your collection postcode, access details and expected storage period. Include large, fragile or unusually valuable items so they can be discussed.

2. Agree preparation and collection

Confirm what will be packed beforehand and whether you need packing assistance. The agreed belongings are collected and recorded for storage.

3. Store the agreed contents

Your belongings remain in storage for the arranged period. If your plans change or you need access, contact us to discuss the available arrangements.

4. Arrange return delivery

When you know where and when the items are needed, provide the delivery address and access details. Confirm the return booking and any associated charges before making final plans around it.

Accessing belongings while they are stored

Access is arranged in advance. Contact us before planning a visit or expecting an item to be retrieved.

If you think you will need individual items, tell us before collection. We can discuss the requirement and confirm what arrangements are possible, including notice and any handling or delivery charges.

Keep passports, keys, medication, essential paperwork and anything you use regularly with you. Label boxes clearly and retain your own contents list so you can identify what you have stored.

Discuss collection and return

Preparing furniture and boxes for storage

Good preparation makes both collection and the eventual return easier.

  • Make sure items are clean and dry before packing.
  • Use suitable boxes and avoid making individual boxes too heavy.
  • Label boxes with their contents and intended destination room.
  • Keep furniture fittings together and identify any dismantled pieces.
  • Tell us about fragile, high-value, unusually heavy or specialist items.
  • Discuss appliances, batteries, liquids, plants and other potentially restricted items before collection.
  • Keep essentials and frequently needed belongings outside the storage consignment.

Hazardous items, gas bottles, flammable substances, certain paints or chemicals, explosives and perishable goods cannot be stored. If you would like help preparing the contents, include packing requirements in your enquiry.

What affects removal storage costs?

Storage costs depend on the space required, the storage period and the work needed to collect and return your belongings.

When requesting a quote, discuss:

  • The volume and type of items.
  • Collection access, including stairs, lifts and loading distance.
  • Packing materials and packing assistance.
  • Furniture dismantling or reassembly.
  • The chargeable storage period and billing frequency.
  • Any access or item-retrieval requirements.
  • Return delivery location and access.
  • Changes to the planned storage period or delivery date.

Check which charges are included and which are separate. Comparing collection, storage and return together gives a more useful picture than comparing the storage rate alone.

Combine storage with your removal

Storage can form part of a household move, a business relocation or a longer journey. If you are moving a warehouse or business stock, see warehouse relocation.

If you are arranging long-distance removals, explain whether your belongings can be delivered immediately or need to wait until the destination is ready.

For an office relocation, identify the furniture and equipment that must go directly to the new premises and anything that can be stored.
